International Transportation - Transit Growth Exceeds Targets
About 8.482 million tons of commodities were transited via the country during the nine months of current Iranian year (March 20-Dec. 20, 2012), showing a growth of 17.1 percent compared to the figure for the same period of preceding year.
Head of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization Shahryar Afandizadeh said that the figure exceeded the target of the Fifth Economic Development Plan (2010-2015) by 30.3 percent, IRNA reported.
The official added that development of road terminals are among the steps taken to facilitate transit made through the country.
He said that implementation of the law on easing transit, development of roads, highways, freeways and welfare complexes are among the infrastructural measures taken to achieve the set objectives.
The official went on to say that increasing the capacity of the ports especially Shahid Rajaei and Imam Khomeini ports located in Hormuzgan and Khuzestan provinces respectively will have significant impact on development of transit sector.
Participating in the international conferences and introducing the privileges of transferring goods through Iran will help improve the sector.
Afandizadeh also said that development of North-South Corridor, established by Iran, India and Russia, in cooperation of 13 countries is among objectives of the transit working group.
The official added that developing the transit route of Iran-Iraq-Syria to northern Africa and southern Europe is another target pursued by the group.
